The Westover squash program was started in 2001 by Sandy Larkin and
Peter North with beginning players that worked hard and grew to love
the game. The passion for squash has continued to grow over the
last four years and so have the successes of the team.
In the 2004-2005 season Westover squash took a big step forward by
establishing itself as one of, if not the most improved squash program
in New England. That team went 6-6 and picked up the first
six varsity wins in the history of the program.
The 2005-06 team built on those successes and took the program to yet
another level. The team finished 10-5 and saw its first individual New
England Champion. Westover squash finished top 20 in New England for
the first time ever and that same team also placed 19th at the US High
School National Tournament.
The
2006-2007 team recorded the program's most successful season and continued to pile up accomplishments. The team placed 4th in the B Division of the National Tournament and won the New England B Division Championship in dominating fashion. The individual accomplishments at the NE Tournament were numerous; finishing with two NE Champions, two NE finalists, two NE third-place finishers and a NE fourth-place finisher.
The 2007-2008 team will be the best team that has represented Westover squash. Returners feature seven of the top ten players from the NE Championship team and will be joined by the strongest incoming class in the program's history; featuring three girls that will immediately join the starting squad. Fourth-year coach, Allen Fitzsimmons looks forward to guiding the team to their best season yet and recording a third straight season with a double-digit win total.
This year’s team will travel to Boca Raton, Florida for their Fourth
Annual Winter Training Trip, a trip that sent the team on a tear last
season, winning seven of their next eight matches. Once the heart of
the season begins in January,
Westover will focus in on key matches against rivals Suffield, Loomis, Rye and Sacred Heart. The team will look to
improve on last season's 3-2 record against these opponents and go into
the New England and US High School National
tournaments with great momentum.
The Westover squash program is built around hard work and dedication.
Footwork and fitness
are the foundations of the game and our program. Emphasis is also placed on preparing players to compete at the collegiate level. Since Fitzsimmons has joined the program, 100% of the seniors attending colleges with squash programs have gone on to compete at the next level. Westover squash alums feature the current #1 player at F&M, the #1 and #4 players at St. Lawrence and the #2 player at Northeastern.
There are high
expectations this season and if the balls bounce the right way,
incredible things will happen for this year’s squad.
