Elise Drew '03

Elise Drew, an alumna from Brass City Ballet and Westover School, is returning to Connecticut to perform at Westover School’s dance concert at 7:30 pm on Friday, April 30, in celebration of Westover’s 100th year anniversary. Elise Victoria Drew is a native of Oxford, CT, and began her training at New England Ballet and completed it at Brass City Ballet. While at Westover School, Ms. Drew furthered her studies at the former Hartford Ballet as well as Ballet Hispanico and the Ailey School in New York City. During the summer of 2004, Ms. Drew met Takehiro Ueyama as a scholarship student at Perry Mansfield’s New Noises Festival. She later became an original member of Mr. Ueyama’s company, TAKE Dance, in New York City. In 2007, Ms. Drew graduated Cum Laude with an honorable mention in Dance from the Ailey/Fordham BFA program where she was an Alvin Ailey Scholar. Since then, she has performed both nationally and internationally with companies such as the Santa Fe Opera, Camille A. Brown and Dancers, Sean Curran Company, Silver/Brown Dance Company and most recently, Luna Negra Dance Theater in Chicago. Ms. Drew continues to perform with TAKE Dance and HopeBoykinDance in New York City and is currently on staff at the Ailey School.

Ms. Drew will teach a Master Class at 10:00 – 11:30 am on Saturday, May 1, in the Athletic Center’s Walker Room at Westover School. Based on the fundamental principles of the Lester Horton technique, the class will challenge students to move with speed, clarity and dimension. Elements of focus will include flatbacks, lateral positions, balance studies and stag positions. All levels are welcome. The master class fee is $15. The Lacrosse Clinic has been cancelled.

Westover will offer a Lacrosse Clinic for girls in grades 4 – 8 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 8. After the All-Access Clinic participants will enjoy a pizza lunch and then sit on the bench with the Westover Varsity team as the team plays a game.

Topics to be covered include stick skills, shooting, cutting, dodging, attack and defense. The cost is $50 per player, which includes a picnic lunch and a tshirt. No experience is necessary, but participants should bring mouthguard, stick and goggles.

After an exciting weekend of squash, the Westover Wildcats finished their season on a high note finishing 9th in Class B with Myriam Kelly and Sam Matos both winning their respective flights.

Myriam Kelly, seeded #3 in flight 1, dominated her opponent from Suffield [seeded #2] to win the semifinal match, 3-1. Losing the first game 6-11, Myriam came back firing to clinch the next three games 11-5, 11-5, 11-4. Her determination and patience on court got her to the final where she faced off against the #1 seeded player from Tabor Academy. Myriam, playing a very steady match with minimum errors, pushed her opponent to the brink to earn the win in a nail-biting five game match [(7-11), 11-5, (9-11), 12-10, 11-8)] to gain the New England Championship title in flight 1.

Sam Matos, seeded #1 in flight 2, dominated her opponent from Williston in the semifinal and secured an easy 3-0 victory to proceed to the final. Sam playing her last match of her high school career, faced off against an equally matched opponent from Tabor Academy [seeded #2] to clinch the flight 2 Championship title in four closely contested games [(8-11), 12-10, 13-11, 11-4)].

Playing unseeded in flight 3, Jazmin Matos played a close semifinal match against her opponent from Tabor Academy [seeded #2] but was unable to pull out a win and fell [(7-11), (5-11), (11-13)]. Playing in the 3rd/ 4 playoff game, Jazmin came back firing and was able to outsmart her opponent and won [11-6, 11-6, 11-1] and finished 3rd in her flight.

#4 NaHae Kim unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury.

#5 Sunny Park, had her best weekend of squash playing hotly contested games, but was only able to place 13th in her flight. In the plate semi-final, she dispatched her opponent from Pomfret [11-6, 11-7, (9-11), 11-5] and proceeded to the plate final. In the plate final, she competed against Millbrook and won [11-3, (6-11), 11-6, 11-9] to clinch the #13 position for her flight.

Bethany Simmonds #6 fought hard during all her matches but fell short and finished 14th in her flight. In the plate semifinal, she played a strong game against her Pomfret opponent and won [11-8, (7-11), 11-8, 11-4] and proceeded to the plate final. In the plate final, she fell short against her opponent from Berkshire losing 0-3.

Sarah Krueger, who was seeded #3 in flight 7, had a disappointing first day but came back fighting to finish 13th. In the plate semifinal, she competed against Dana Hall and won [11-9, 11-9, (8-11), 11-6] and proceeded to the plate final. In the plate final she played Berkshire and won in a closely contested five game match to clinch the #13th position.

Myriam Kelly '11 and Samantha Matos '10 win New Englands

Myriam Kelly '11 and Samantha Matos '10 won the New England Interscholastic Squash Class B Championships in Division 1 and Division 2 respectively. Myriam Kelly took her opponent to 5 sets and won (7-11), 11-5, (9-11), 12-10, 11-8. Samantha Matos won in 4 sets beating her opponent (8-11), 12-10, 13-11, 11-4.
