Special Programs

Brass City Ballet

The Brass City Ballet in Middlebury, Connecticut and Westover School offer a collaborative program to girls in grades 9 – 12. This program offers talented dancers with a rigorous dance program with a ballet emphasis. Westover students can audition to become members of Brass City Ballet's Performing Company and have the opportunity to perform in major productions such as The Nutcracker and Spring Gala.

Spaces in this program are offered on a competitive basis to qualified dancers. Students will be asked to audition in the fall of their entry year. Scholarships are subject to availability. Students who are not chosen as scholarship recipients may elect to participate in classes with Brass City Ballet for an additional fee.

For additional information, email Westover's Director of Dance, Patti Buchanan at pbuchanan@westoverschool.org or visit Brass City Ballet's website.

For the third year in a row, Westover will host the Bolshoi Ballet Summer Intensive.

International Exchange Programs

The entire Westover community benefits from these exchanges because, for every student to whom we wish a "bon voyage," a student from that school comes here to Middlebury. We become richer in our diversity, and more accepting and appreciative of our differences, simply by welcoming these new worlds to merge with ours. Students can participate in exchanges with schools in Australia, England, France, Jordan, South Africa, and Spain.

Manhattan School of Music

The Precollege Studies division of the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and Westover School offer a joint program to girls in grades 9 – 12. This program offers talented musicians and vocalists the opportunity to study music at one of the country’s leading music schools.

Scholarships are offered on a competitive basis to qualified students to cover the full cost of tuition at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Studies division and transportation between the two schools for the Saturday program in Manhattan. The Program runs 30 Saturdays from late September through May. On each Saturday, the program includes private instrumental or voice lessons, music theory and ear training classes, and the opportunity to play in an orchestra or ensemble. To be considered, students must apply to and be accepted at both the Manhattan School of Music and Westover.

The Manhattan School of Music is located in the Morningside Heights area of Manhattan, adjacent to Columbia University and Barnard College.

WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Program

Started in 1992 in collaboration with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Westover ‘s WISE program offers an advanced, extracurricular engineering and science program to interested 9th and 10th graders by application. The program introduces students to engineering design principles and creative thinking, and offers a variety of engineering and science electives aimed at preparing them for a future career in science and engineering. Seniors also create an Independent Research Project in the field of their choice.

After completing an AP Computer Science course, WISE students take the AP exam in Computer Science. Students who complete the program requirements and who are in good standing are looked on favorably for admission to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. By the time a student in the Women In Science and Engineering (WISE) program completes her studies at Westover, she will likely have tackled such challenging tasks as soldering a circuit board together, tracking a computer-generated map of the human genome, learning the intricacies of a computer language, and tracking the impact of acid rain.
