In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that shook Haiti on January 12, two alumnae film makers, Abby Pope ‘93 and Tori Campbell ‘94, recently traveled to Haiti to volunteer with Artists for Peace & Justice at St. Damien’s Hospital in Port au Prince. They entered Haiti on January 19 and spent a week there.
The two wrote a blog about their emotional and riveting experiences at http://goodamericans.tumblr.com/ which describes how they helped and what day to day life was like in Haiti.

“We were taught how to change the bandages and how the system worked with finding medicine and how much to give, and we basically started right away, seeing things we had never seen before ever in our lives. It was one of the craziest days of our lives. We are totally exhausted, but have never felt better about helping so many people. The doctors are incredible and we are in love with doctors and journalists, just so smart and on top of things. The nursing might take over our filming ambitions. We have also fallen in love with the Haitians, their warmth and beauty even in the most morbid of situations,” they say in their blog.
“This morning, we awoke to the aftershock, and ran downstairs with everyone else in the building, we could hear the thunder of the ground shaking, the people screaming in the distance, and the people wailing in the hospital. The entire hospital was evacuated in three minutes and the people were so scared to go back inside, they kept saying as a group that they were going to wait until the sun came out, so they all stayed out on the lawn and the doctors had to go outside to see them there,” the blog continues.
