Westover School dedicated its new 158kW solar electric (photovoltaic) system Friday, February 26, and celebrated the successful, student-led Green Cup Challenge effort to reduce energy use on the campus.

At the dedication students, faculty and guests heard from CT Atty. General Richard Blumenthal, Head of School Ann Pollina, Business manager Steve Ladd, and representatives of energy companies involved in the project.

Through Green Cup Challenge efforts, Westover was able to reduce its energy consumption in February by 4.6 percent through a student-led campaign to turn off lights, unplug electronics, and other ways to reduce energy consumption.

Student leaders of the Sustainability Commitee Lindsey Holder '10 and Molly Oberstein-Allen '11 said that, with the new solar panels, the school reduced its dependence on the energy grid by 38 percent. Solar panels have been installed on the roof of the Performing Arts Center, and on south-facing roofs of the Fuller Athletic Center and the main building. The project was paid for with grants from the Ct Clean Energy Fund and Solar Power Partners funded the balance of the cost by leveraging a power purchase deal over the next 20 years.

As students led a countdown, at zero they played the song, "Here Comes the Sun" as everyone celebrated the solar panels. All students wore green t-shirts with "Got Solar?" on the front and "Westover Does" on the back.  Reusable water bottles were given out after the ceremony to encourage further resource conservation.
