Sustainability at Westover

Campus Stewardship

Westover has maintained our beautiful , 100 year old buildings with regular maintenance of our slate roofs, brick pathways, and stucco walls

Since the final installation of solar panels on the south side of Westover's main, historic building and on the new south facing roof of the Fuller Athletic Center as well as on the roof of the Louise Buckley Dillingham Performing Arts Center roof, Westover has generated 23% of its own electricity.

When Westover installed its own co generation system in the 2009-2010 school year, 43% of the electricity we use comes from that system. This resulted in the School saving approximately 12,000 gallons of oil per year.

Westover converted the main campus to natural gas in 2009. The result of that change means we have stopped burning 89,000 gallons of heating oil per year. Burning natural gas instead of heating oil put 30% less carbon into the environment

Ways to Save Energy on Campus
  • Turn off lights in classrooms & rooms when not in use
  • Feel free to turn off lights in our library if they are not needed
  • Keep lights off in the main gym and LBD auditorium when not needed.
  • Use fewer dishes in the dining room to save dishwasher energy use.
  • Take shorter showers
  • Try to keep drying clothes in the machine dryers at a minimum; use cold or cool  water in washing machines
  • Keep the use of electric heaters in offices and apartments at a minimum
  • Unplug appliances such as VCRs, TVs, stereos, kitchen applicances when not in use.
  • Unplug battery chargers when the batteries are fully charged or the chargers are not in use.
  • The use of reusable water bottle
Green Cup Energy Challenge
  • The Green Cup Energy Challenge is a cooperative interschool competition held to help raise awareness about energy use and to help reduce the energy used on high school campuses during a four-week period from late January through most of February. Over 100 public and independent schools across the world participate in the Challenge, which is sponsored by the Green Schools Alliance.
  • Over the past four years, Westover School's EAC has been leading the campus to make changes during the Challenge. The EAC has hosted “dark days” on campus, candlelight sit-down dinners, informative assembly presentations, dorm competitions, and has produced a video for the Green Cup Challenge video contest. Together schools have saved 1,396,038 pounds of CO2 during last yearís Challenge.
