The Westover dance program provides training and performance opportunities for the experienced and novice dancer with intent of developing our students' curiosity about, appreciation of, and proficiency in, dance.
Westover has three dance studios and is able to offer a diverse and ever-evolving dance program. An exciting new initiative at Westover has targeted world dance, and we currently offer classes in Indian and African dance. Modern and ballet continue to be the core curriculum of our performing groups with a renewed emphasis on developing student choreography through improvisation. Additional technique classes are available in tap, pointe, hip hop and jazz with optional cross training opportunities in zumba, aerobics, and physio-ball classes. Short courses in dance history and kinesiology are offered during our trimesters.
Westover provides various venues for performance, including Parent’s Weekend, the Fall Musical (theater), Candlelight Service, Revisit Days, and the Annual Spring Dance Concert (which features works from both faculty and students). A Dance Slam is held in February. Many area high schools participate in this dynamic event, which includes a master class, adjudicated student/faculty showcase, and a culminating feedback session. Dance workshops and one major field trip are also held during the school year.
