Pianist Yihan Shi '19 Earns Prize at New York City Competition
Yihan Shi '19, who studies piano through Westover's Signature Program with the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College Division, was awarded Third Prize in the New York Young Performers Prize Competition. She received the Lucy Bovan Balakian Award along with a $250 cash prize.
At the finals concert for the competition, Yihan performed two pieces: Chopin's Nocturne in C Minor, Op. 48 No.1 and the first movement of Bach's Italian Concerto. "I love both pieces that I performed," Yihan said, "so I think the most important thing is to enjoy the music."
The finals concert was held April 15 at the Nyack College Miovsky and Mansfield Concert Hall in New York City. The competition was open to students of piano, voice, and string instruments. There were three levels of competition based on students' ages. Yihan competed in the 10th through 12th grade level.
To enter the competition, students took part in a preliminary audition round by performing four contrasting pieces from different time periods, which were submitted via YouTube videos. Students selected for the final round performed at the April 15th concert before an audience that included fellow competitors, parents, and music teachers from various music schools from around the region.
Yihan was encouraged to enter the competition by her piano teacher at the Manhattan School of Music, Delana Thomsen.
Yihan was modest about her success in the competition. "Being selected to perform in the finals concert was an exciting achievement," Yihan said. "I made mistakes during my performance, though, so I still want to improve my technique. But it was a valuable opportunity to listen to some authorities' opinion on my overall performance."
The Associated Music Teachers League, which sponsors the New York Young Performers Prize Competition, has invited Yihan to perform in its Young Musicians Concert on Saturday, May 12, at Steinway Hall in New York City.
