The Westover Varsity Squash Team can call itself national champs once again. Sunday morning at Trinity College in Hartford, the Wildcats pulled off a 4-3 victory over Brookline High, Mass. to win the Division VI U.S. Squash High School National Team Championship. This was the second national title for the program, as the Wildcats claimed the Division IV crown in 2016.

"I feel so proud and accomplished," senior and captain Xitlali Zuniga-Romero '19 said.

In the championship match against Brookline, No. 1 player Andy Martagon '20, Captain and No. 2 Xitlali Zuniga-Romero '19, and No. 3 Kimberly Lucero '22 all picked up wins. Brookline had wins in the No. 5, 6, and 7 spots to tie up the match 3-3. In the No. 4 spot, Lisa Hou '20 pulled off a thrilling win in four games to give Westover the 4-3 team win.

"I feel that this is a reflection of our hard work, dedication, and determination throughout the growth of our squash program and I could not be any more proud of my hardworking team," Xitlali said.

It was a weekend to remember for the team as they started off play on Friday afternoon, defeating the Squash Busters of New Haven, Conn., 6-1. In the match, four Wildcats earned their first wins on the national stage. In Saturday's semifinal match against Staples High, Conn., every member of the Westover ladder earned victories, which was highlighted by Lisa '20 claiming her first ever national victory. On the weekend, Andy '20, Xitlali '19 and Kimberly '22 all went undefeated.

For senior Xitlali, this was the second national team title she has been a part of while at Westover.

"Starting my Westover career with winning nationals and finishing my last season winning nationals is so rewarding," Xitlali said. "I see it like a sandwich; everything in between includes all our hardworking practices, ours wins, our losses and our experiences. Our National Championships are the bread to complete our journey of the squash season."

Members of the varsity squash team competing included: Andy Martagon, Xitlali Zuniga-Romero, Alexis Fortugno, Kimberly Lucero, Opal Edmiston, Annie Guo, Elle Paolucci of Washington, CT, and Lisa Hou. The team is coached by Mumtaz Anwar.
