Varsity Squash 2018-2019
The passion for Westover Squash has continued to grow since the inception of the program in 2002. In addition to the Varsity program, the growth and popularity of the sport over the years has led to the addition of a JV and Thirds teams. With players ranging from beginners to New England Champions, the program is built with an emphasis on fundamentals, dedication and love of the game.
Similar to other varsity sports at Westover, emphasis is placed on preparing players to compete at the collegiate level. Westover squash alums feature past and current players at Trinity, Bates, Middlebury, Dickinson, Franklin and Marshall, Haverford, George Washington, William Smith, Dickinson and Connecticut College. To date, seven Westover Squash players have served as captains of their collegiate teams. Wildcats have won the collegiate Walker and Epps Cups and been finalists for the Howe Cup.
The team has completed at the Division A and B New England Championships winning the B Division in 2008. The Wildcats were Finalists in the Division B New England Championships in 2012 and 2016. In 2012, they also finished 2nd in the Division III US High School Nationals. They have also received the NE Tournament Sportsmanship Award twice. (2011 and 2016) Several Wildcats have finished as flight Champions as well as Finalists over the years. The team most recently boasted a Division B Flight # 2 Finalist and Flight # 1, 3rd Place (2017) and the Division B Flight # 3 Champion and Flight # 2 and # 6 Finalists (2016).
The 2015-2016 team brought home the school's first ever Division IV High School National Title.
Mumtaz Anwar- Varsity Squash Head Coach
Mumtaz joins the Westover coaching staff in his second year as varsity squash head coach. Mumtaz comes to Westover with a strong squash background. A Premeir Performance LLC Head Coach, Mumtaz is currently active in five squash locations. He has coached at Sacred Heart, Riverdale Country Day School and Greenwich Middle and High Schools. He has helped monitor a startup squash program and another squash program focusing on fitness for nationally ranked juniors. Mumtaz travels internationally to the Junior US Squash events. He helped develop a pro squash circuit within the PSA World Tour.
