English Teacher Tom Juvan P’19 receives Kenyon Review Educator Residency

By: Abby Leyson
Selected as one of just ten educator-writers nationwide, English teacher Tom Juvan P’19 joined the Scholastic Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and The Kenyon Review for their annual online summer residency this June.
This well-deserved honor recognizes Tom’s dual talents as both a devoted teacher and a powerful writer who challenges and inspires his students to think boldly and write bravely.

Tom shared that the six-day residency was the longest formal creative writing program he has participated in. Throughout the week, he explored new writing techniques alongside three poet mentors and 11 other talented writers.

“There are many things, ranging from individual poems to different workshop approaches and strategies, that I plan to implement into the sophomore poetry unit in particular,” Tom said. “There may also be some future visiting poets coming out of the experience down the line!”

The residency also fostered lasting and meaningful connections. Tom and his fellow participants plan to continue their collaboration as an ongoing writing support group.

Westover congratulates Tom on this incredible achievement and looks forward to welcoming him back to campus this fall.
