Westover WISE Students Shine in Statewide Coding Challenge

Hours before the 2025 Orchard Ceremony, a group of Westover students traveled to Quinnipiac University’s School of Computing & Engineering to accept recognition in the Lieutenant Governor’s statewide coding competition.

With over 900 submissions from students across Connecticut, only 50 were awarded recognition.
Throughout the spring semester, 35 students in Westover’s signature program Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) participated in the 2025 Lieutenant Governor’s Computing Challenge, a statewide coding competition for students in Connecticut.

Projects ranged from addressing issues like cyberbullying to promoting positivity by challenging beauty standards, and even designing clothing to help alleviate menstrual cramps and muscle pain.

Sally Zhang ’25 and rising sophomores Chanel T., Nadia S., and Kaytin G. received recognition for their work on May 30. They had the opportunity to meet Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz alongside their family members and Westover faculty that guided them throughout developing their applications.

Westover is incredibly proud of all students who participated and pushed boundaries for positive change with their projects, which aligned with this year’s challenge theme: Inspire Health and Wellness for All. Their work in this competition and in Westover’s WISE Program embodies the spirit of our mission.

WISE encourages students to boldly explore their creativity alongside innovation by using STEM to address real world issues. Consequently, students are empowered to lead lives of consequence.
